I am building my own log splitter and i was wondering if anyone knew how to calculate the stress on the beam back stop that the back end of the cylinder connects too. it is a 1" pin diameter, steel plate will be used, and the thickness of the steel is dependent upon the strength.  You'll have a compressive force on that end, and i will have the plate welded to the beam.  This splitter is going to be 20 ton, i need to know how to prove that it can support that.

I would design the plate back stop as a bracket plate. There is a quick and easy method given by Shakya and Vinnakota in their paper presented in the 3rd Quarter 2008 AISC Engineering Journal which is quite easy to follow and based on the current AISC Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings. All you need to know are the plate dimensions, yield strength and load, and you can solve for the required thickness.
