When floor plate meets serrated grating on the same skid

When floor plate meets serrated grating on the same skid

When floor plate meets serrated grating on the same skid

(OP)
This might a very common contruction detail.

On a steel skid mainly supporting a building has an exposed portion to work as a platform. The building floor is covered by 1/4" plate, while the platform is by 1 1/4" serrated grating. If I do nothing, this is a 1" hurdle at the door (interface of grating and plate).

What is the typical solution? Shim the plate up all around? The base steel beams are on the same elevation (done with continuous beams).

Thanks

RE: When floor plate meets serrated grating on the same skid

One solution that we used in electric power stations is to weld the steel plate to to thinner grating. In your case that would be 1" grating with 1/4" plate welded to it used adjacent to 1 1/4" grating. Not the cheapest solution, but a fringe benefit is to make the steel plate floor more rigid (important in many industrial applications).

It is a solution used by others. To use rebar or steel bars as shim is another way, but welding seems too much (to weld the rebar or steel bars down to base frame and weld the plate to the shim)

In my view, a ramp-down panel (by floor plate) right outside of the door should work. But I never did this before.

Thanks for the input.

Use a support member made up of two channels, one 1" higher than the other. It provides a stop bar for the grating as a bonus.
