i am working on a control system that will be purged for class 1 division 1 area. can i use standard off the shelf galvanized nipples to connect my control box to a junction hub or will i need to use ridgid conduit? if i need to use ridgid conduit what sch of conduit?

RE: ridgid conduit
You can use standard nipples if they are uninterupted with no fittings within the rated area. If you cross the rated boundary, you may need to install a seal fitting at the crossing.
Look at the Appleton electric website for fittings. www.appletonelec.com
Good luck

One is that electrical nipples are approved and plumbing nipples are not.
The second reason has to do partly with the approval. Part of the approval for electrical nipples has to do with the inside finish and the amount of seam welding flash allowed.
They are the same dimensions and are physically interchangeable but an inspector may decline to accept an installation done with plumbing nipples.
