End Cap Design

End Cap Design

End Cap Design

(OP)
I am currently designing an end cap (domed end) using PD5500. I cannot find any reference to SIFs in this code, or in the explanatory code for Section 3.5.2 (PD6550). If I have a step change in wall thickness from the pipe to the end pipe is there a SIF to be applied? Could someone please refer me to the relevant section of the code. Thanks.

RE: End Cap Design

By dome end do you mean hemispherical or is it a dished flanged end? There shouldn't be an SIF but you must taper the larger plate down according to the spec. The highest stress will be at the knuckle, away from the step.

Thanks for reply, it will be a flanged pup piece with dished end welded on. I couldnt find anything on SIFs but thought there would be. I will specify a smoothed taper.

RE: End Cap Design

JT100,
What size are you talking about?
Is this in the category of a Vessel?
or
in the category of Pipe?

RE: End Cap Design

It is 20inch OD. The change in wall thickness is only 3mm. The end cap  is on a pipe, however it is not covered in the pipeline design code and so we are referring to pd5500 for guidance. Thanks.
