cosmos hinge analysis

cosmos hinge analysis

cosmos hinge analysis

(OP)
i am currently analysing a pole which begins in a horizontal position, and is then liften by a ram to a vertical position, about  a hinge. I  am interested in the point stresses on the pole at the lifting equipment location. When i use a hinge restraint, the stresses on the pole are huge, in the order of 10 to the 7, what am i doing wrong?

RE: cosmos hinge analysis

You may be analyzing the pole, but how are you modeling it? There are not many details given here. What type of elements are you using?

A stress of 10psi isn't huge at all.

RE: cosmos hinge analysis

the model consists of a pople approx 16m in length, with decreasing diameter cylinders, from approx 500mm to 300mm, 10mm wall thickness, meshed using default size tetra elements. A force is applied a short distance from the base of the horizontal pole, at an angle, say 60degrees to the horizontal, acting as a hydraulic ram. The force is equal to the weight of the pole plus 10%. When the base is modelled and restrained as a hinge (i.e. how it would be in reality, the stresses exceed 100 million MPa, when the hinge location is modelled as a fixed restraint, the stress is low, especially on the point of the application of the forces, which I would not expect.
HAve you got any thoughts on the subject/what i could be doing wrong at all? thanks.

RE: cosmos hinge analysis

How many elements through the thickness?

Can you send a screen shot of the restraints on the base?
