centrifugal pump over current

centrifugal pump over current

centrifugal pump over current

(OP)
what are some of the common cause for a submiserable centrifugal pump to go over current ???
hydualicly speaking ....

another question .... will a centrifugal pump, pump in the right direction even the impeller is rotating in the wrong direction?? if yes, what are some of the by product of that???

RE: centrifugal pump over current

Over current can be caused by:
Bearings failing.
Not enough restriction in flow.
Motor stalled.

Yes the water will continue to flow in the correct direction but you may only get %50 of the flow you are paying for.

RE: centrifugal pump over current

A real common cause that I see now is when VFDs are used, and people think they can get more flow by over speeding the motors using the VFD, "because they can". They don't realize that power will increase by the CUBE of the speed increase, so they get a little motor flow and a LOT more power consumed.

RE: centrifugal pump over current

are you using a VFD on the pump?

RE: centrifugal pump over current

Check the pump curve.  Most pumps can do more owrk than the motor that powers them will supply.  You can be pumping more water higher that motor will deliver.
Flow x Head = work.

Answer to OZ, yes ...I am using a VFD

RE: centrifugal pump over current

So what is the maximum speed setting of the VFD? Did someone tweak it trying to get more flow from the pump?
