Effect of vanadium on Cr-Mo-V steels
Effect of vanadium on Cr-Mo-V steels
(OP)
I try to ajust the vanadium in A Cr-Mo-V special grade
My question is what is the effect of the vanadium on the Cr-Mo-V steels when the vanadium change from 0 to 0.20 %
Thanks

RE: Effect of vanadium on Cr-Mo-V steels
Are you familiar with any of the properties of vanadium? It is a carbide former, it retards softening at high temperatures used for tempering or during use.
RE: Effect of vanadium on Cr-Mo-V steels
"Vanadium also improves toughness by stabilizing dissolved nitrogen The impact transition temperature also increases".(source ASM Handbook Vol 1 pp 358,Tenth Edition)
"Vanadium is usually not added for hardenability in quenched and tempered structural steels(such as ASTM A 678 grade D),but is added to provide secondary hardening during tempering. Vanadium is a strong carbide former, and the steel must be austenitized at a sufficiently high temperature and for a sufficient length of time to ensure tat the vanadium is in solutionand thus able to contribute to hardenability. Moreover, solution is possible only if small amounts of vanadium are added." (source ASTM Handbook,Vol 1, pp 395,10th Edition)
Learn the rules,so you know how to break them properly.

you can find the wide answer just from literature(eg. stahlschlussel or ASTM metals hanbook series). But as i understanding you are looking forward to some practical experience. For an application of quenched-tempered bars for automative rear axle commonly Cr-Mo grades are preferred. But for bar diameter >60 mm Cr-Mo-V grade is preferred.Addition V maintains through hardening and reduce core-surface hardness differance as general principle. In additon, as strong carbide stabilizer it reduces quench cracking sevsitivity of the steel.

i will chek on the ASM handbook
I found also this good paper
