Rebuilding a generator from 50Hz to 60Hz

Rebuilding a generator from 50Hz to 60Hz

Hello,

For a wind energy project a client wants to buy wind turbines from Europe to be installed in the US. The turbines are 400V, 300KW and 50Hz. He wants us to rebuild them to 480V, 60Hz. Is this possible by just increasing the speed of the generator (changing the gearbox ratio)?

RE: Rebuilding a generator from 50Hz to 60Hz

At 400 Volts and 50 Hz your Volts/Hz ratio is 8:1.
Used as is. At 60 Hz your Volts/Hz ratio will still be 8:1
Use them as is with only a gearbox change. Your electrical capacity at 480 Volts will be 300 kW x (60Hz/50Hz) = 360 kW.

Check the auxiliary equipment to make sure any controls or other systems are compatible also.

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for the quick replies! The controls we can change in the parameter menu so no problem there. The only thing what I need to change besides the gearbox ratio are the capacitors for reactive power compensation.

Best regards,

other considerations would be shaft critical speeds and support resonaces frequencies.  I recall one Large ST that had many problems with vibration even after all rotating elemet were replaced.
