NDE-LP - Demonstartion

NDE-LP - Demonstartion

NDE-LP - Demonstartion

(OP)
Hi,
Anybody guide me that, when we need to demonstrate LPI to an AI?
If we rewrite the LP Procedure to current edition/addenda without any technique changed, still do we need to demonstrate to an AI?
If yes, Code reference?
Your prompt reply will be highly appriciated.
Thanks
BPVN

RE: NDE-LP - Demonstartion

The AI has the right to ask you to demonstrate the effectiveness of your procedure. From personal experience, most of our AI's will not ask. Review T-150 & T-170, Article 1 of ASME V.

RE: NDE-LP - Demonstartion

Which Code are you working to?

Below is an excerpt from Article 1, ASME Section V Paragraph T-150(c)

(c) When required by the referencing Code Section, all
nondestructive examinations performed under this Code
Section shall be done to a written procedure. This procedure
shall be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the
Inspector.

RE: NDE-LP - Demonstartion

Demonstration of LP procedure, not mandatory as per ASME Sec VIII Div 1.

For ASME Sec VIII Div 2 vessels, if the MDMT is established using fracture mechanics method and if one of the NDE method used to evaluate the surface flaw is LP (In addition to UT) then a demonstration of LP procedure may be asked. While the above is an inference from 3.11.2.8 (c) of Sec VIII Div 2. On the other hand, if one goes to Part 7 (as suggested in 3.11.2.8 (c), then the section covering LP does not call for LP demonstration. So it can be inferred either way.

Sec VIII Div 3 :: KE 105 (a) Non Desructive Examination Procedure
a) Except .......,all nondestructive examinations required by this Division shall be conducted in accordance with detailed written procedures that have been demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Inspector. The procedures shall comply with the appropriate article of Section V for the particular examination method. Written procedures and records of demonstration of procedure capability ....to these procedures shall be made available to the Inspector and included in the Manufacturer's Construction Records (see KS-320).

RE: NDE-LP - Demonstartion

bmoorthy,
Please check MANDATORY APPENDIX 8 of ASME VIII-1. Specifically, see paragraph 8-1(c) which states the following......

(c) Liquid penetrant examination shall be performed
in accordance with a written procedure, certified by the
Manufacturer to be in accordance with the requirements
of T-150 of Section V.

Below is an excerpt from Article 1, ASME Section V Paragraph T-150(c)

(c) When required by the referencing Code Section, all
nondestructive examinations performed under this Code
Section shall be done to a written procedure. This procedure
shall be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the
Inspector.
