Flow calculation through valve and hose

Flow calculation through valve and hose

Flow calculation through valve and hose

(OP)
I need to calculate the flow through a 3" valve and a length of 3" hose...I've done hundreds of these for flow through rigid piping, never anything through a hose.

Does anyone have any empirical data for flow through hoses?  It will be strewn such that the bend radii are as large are possible.  Were it pipe I'd do an fl/d*v^2/2g with a known f...I have no idea what realistic friction factors for hose might be, .02? 0.03?  Reasonable estimates for total K given some random bends?

Thanks for any help!

RE: Flow calculation through valve and hose

Use a roughness of about 1/2 that of steel pipe.  Everything else is the same, K = K, although if the hose is flexible enough for the pressure, the ID might change.  I'll leave that one to you.

RE: Flow calculation through valve and hose

Is the ID of the hose smooth (rubber or lined) or corrugated (SS with SS braiding on the outside)?

Good luck,

RE: Flow calculation through valve and hose

In the past when performing flow calculations involving hoses, I've used vendor data to determine pressure drop based on various flows for each hose type.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about (involving lay-flat hose):

I've found similar tables in the past for rigid SS hose.

A "quick and dirty" rule of thumb is that pressure drop in hose is approximately 3 times that of steel pipe.

KoachCSR Thanks a million, that was exactly what I was looking for and for the right kind of hose.  For whatever reason I assumed hose manufacturer's wouldn't have this kind of data.
