boms with multiple qty column?

boms with multiple qty column?

boms with multiple qty column?

(OP)
I have an assembly with different configurations calling up different parts in different quantities.
I hunted high and low for how to get multiple assy configs to show up as several QTY columns in my BOM and eventually found it is only possible if I only show the top level of sub-assembly.
So I cannot have multiple qty columns and show the parts inside my sub assemblies?
Surely it must be possible somehow? I'm extremely dissappointed. I'm going to have to dissolve my sub assemblies into the top level assy. and that is going to be difficult to manage and keep everything up to date (many times more work and lots of possiblilites for errors).

I don't want my folks to have to refer to a tree of drawings for each assembly - I wanted it all on one sheet.

RE: boms with multiple qty column?

moyesboy,

We are using the Excel BOM here, where that feature does not work.  I have hacked with it a bit though.

Are you trying to do an exploded BOM?  I am trying to imagine what this looks like on a tabulated parts list, and it sounds like a nightmare.

Why not just do one level of assembly per assembly drawing.  Let your ERP/MRP do the exploded BOMs.

RE: boms with multiple qty column?

So you want an Indented or Parts Only BOM showing different configs?

You can insert multiple BOMs from the same assy, each referencing a different config. Duplicate columns can be hidden, BOMs can be split, QTY column can be renamed, Boms can be aligned to suit.

Yes, it's a PITA hassle for what should be something simple ... but it works.

RE: boms with multiple qty column?

Hi, moyesboy:

Many users have similar problems like yours when using configuration.  I do not use configuration and never had to struggle with BOM.

Thanks for the responses.
On the job in hand I rejigged the assembly structure a bit to get what I wanted with the multiple qty columns.
The assembly isn't too complex- but it has extra pcbs and looms inside for if it is a 4channel, 8 channel, 12 channel but I wanted them all on the same drawing.

For my many slightly different but similar small aseemblies I am going to have to do a separate drawing, or at least a separate sheet and bom for each assembly when the difference doesn't occur at the top assembly level.

In many cases I create sub assemblies purely to manage collections of parts that will always be listed as separate items in the top level assembly. It is a pity that this prevents the correct operation of multiple quantity columns for configs.
