Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

(OP)
special question to the nx experts ,
I have attached a part where I want to replace directly a contour  with another contour sheetbody. With replace face it will not work. Working with trim body (deactivated features in the attachment) the contour sheetbody is working.
Can anybody give me an advice why replace face doesn't work?
thx in ad

Neither one of your zip files could be opened.  Perhaps you should try uploading it to the GTAC scratch area and I'll download it from there.

RE: Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

What exact version are you using? I'm finding that neither the trim nor the replace face was working in NX-6.0.2.8. And what may I ask have you been able to do to expunge the part history?

In your model what appears at first glance to be likely to be a solid body has deliberately been sewn to a sheet rather than a solid. I don't know that it affects the function of what you're attempting but it does seem odd.

Perhaps beyond that part of the problem is just the complex nature at that distance of the surface you intended to use. I was able to duplicate what appeared to be your replace face after deleting the original with nearly no problems. After realising there was and easy way to change a few features to return a solid I offer you the attached solution.

The file I've created is dumbed down to reduce size for posting to illustrate the methods that I used. Also the apparent five sided through curve mesh surface that I have re-used in the patch was of very doubtful construction. Why that is so would be an issue for another day.

John,

7-Zip is a freebie zip utility that appeared to work on these archives.

I'm using NX 6.04
and pulled on GTAC scratch 3backen.prt

RE: Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

I'm not sure what I can say other than that Trim Body is generally a much more robust function, particularly for the type of work that you're doing here.  I would say that since you apparently have accomplished what you needed to do, using Trim Body, that I wouldn't lose any sleep over the fact that Replace Face did not work in this particular situation.

thx on reply
I even don't know and want to learn why it doesn't work.
If there is anything I must control. I use this to change the contour sheet in tooling, the parameter are lost on those bodies and replace face works on 3 of 5 contour plates but why not in all cases ( like in the attachement)and trimbody works. Is it something with the local tolerances?
please give me an advice
thx

RE: Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

My advice is to do what works.

As to what is causing this issue with this particular model, it could be many things, but if you really want to know, I would suggest that contact GTAC, submit your models, have them open an IR and have Development investigate.

But that being said, if you did use Trim Body instead of Replace Face, what exactly is it that you could not do that could have been done using Replace Face?

Using replace face is the direct way , OR?
why should I use an workaround.  Things in Nx should work simple - ST is very nice - I only want to understand why it doesn't work in this case. - contact GTAC - boring -
better to ask John Baker - thanks John

RE: Why does "trim body" work and "replace face" doesn't

I'm sorry, but that's the best that I can do.

If you give it to GTAC someone in development might be able to ferret out what makes this particular case so unique and from that perhaps something can be learned, both in terms of how we could make the Replace Face function more robust (this can really only be done when we are given real-world examples which push the envelope) or perhaps in identifying modeling practices that you may need to avoid or modify in the future to assure more usable models.
