can anyone tell me where to find specifications for power cable installation on a rotating machine in a class 1 div 1 area?  i am designing a machine that pivots 92 deg and i do not know how to install the power cable to meet the classification for the area.

RE: class 1 div 1 power cable

You can buy braided flexible conduit rated for Class I Division 1 installations.  It is expensive and the quarter turn may still be an issue if the conduit connection is large.  Check the Cooper Crouse Hinds catalog.

RE: class 1 div 1 power cable

NEC (NFPA 70) article 501.10.

If this machine pivots during operation (like an oscillating fan), you'll probably want to get into the design of sealed joints between rigid pieces rather than a flexible cable in my opinion...

If it's only a pivot once in a while to re-align a position, you might get by with one of the flexible connections allowed in the code.

Let's see what the others say, though.

Good on ya!

the machine i am designing is for the recycling of solvents.  the unit will only rotate once or twice in a 12 hour period.  this will allow to remove any waste from the solvent tank.  will the flexible conduit work for this application?

RE: class 1 div 1 power cable

I would not have a lot of confidence in the flex conduit for this application.  It can handle some vibration and the occasional disconnection for maintenance, but I've never seen it used when there is a routine 90 deg rotation between the ends. I can envision the braid pulling loose from the end fittings after "a while".   This is not based on any actual data, just a first impression.

Section 501.10 was a good starting point because 501.10(A)(2) sends you to 501.140. Section 501.140(A)(2) addresses the condition I believe is being described. Section 501.140(B) describes how to install it properly.

rbalex,

Nicely done.  I never had to follow the NEC thread that far.

Double good on ya!
