Effectiveness of Zinc plated fasteners

Effectiveness of Zinc plated fasteners

(OP)
I was wondering if anyone had a link to some studies or data showing how effective Zinc plating is for fasteners relative to other platings or say stainless steel?  In my experience I've found that Zn doesn't hold up particularly well when exposed year round to the elements but I'd like some data to make a case for using different fastener coatings.  Thanks in advance!

RE: Effectiveness of Zinc plated fasteners

In the article "Corrosion of Metallic Coated Steels", ASM HANDBOOK Volume 13B Corrosion: Materials, the corrosion rates of zinc-coated steels are reported from 1.7-5.6 μm/year in low corrosion environments in the USA up to 14.7 μm/year in a severe industrial environment (Pittsburgh, PA).  Typical electroplated fasteners have a coating thickness of 5-12 μm.  This does not represent much corrosion resistance unless this is a replaceable item or the life expectancy is only several years (or less).

Thanks for the links guys.  I can't read the publications without buying them but what I've gleaned from excerpts has been very helpful.  Thanks again!
