Article 645 CRAC Unit Fire Shutdown

Article 645 CRAC Unit Fire Shutdown

Article 645 CRAC Unit Fire Shutdown

(OP)
The NEC changed in 2002 to now require that all CRAC units shutdown if an underfloor smoke detector activates.

I'm curious what is being done in existing installations.  Is it required to upgrade, or is it only required to upgrade on newly installed units.  And how is it affected by the "classification" of the room.  The area in question is a raised floor area in a building that was built back in 1985.

RE: Article 645 CRAC Unit Fire Shutdown

Richanton,

My local AHJ would allow the old, non-interlocked system to continue operating until any work was done in the room (related or not) that required a visit from an inspector.

In other words, he'd require the whole room to come up to current code (all of them).

I think it'll depend on the practice in your locality -- but it's a good idea to plan for the upgrade anyway.  Don't skimp on safety just because an upgrade isn't required...

Good on ya,

Goober Dave

All of them I have designed or seen did shut down. NEC or not it's  good ideal.
I think it is in mechanical and or  building codes.
