Interview for Machine Design job

(OP)
Hi all

I lost my job 3 weeks ago, but the good news is that I've got an interview coming up for a new job, but a large part of the job is Machine Design using Solidworks. I've used solidworks plenty of times, but never for machine design. Can anyone give me an idea of what Machine Design entails, and what part of SW's I use for this. I could do alot of searching on the web, but I would rather hear it from an eng-tip engineer.

I hope that this makes sense.

All help appreciated.

RE: Interview for Machine Design job

An aeroplane is a machine, as is a helicopter, so I'm guessing to some extent you've been doing it already.

Machinery design covers a lot of industry.  A lot of the time there tend to be a lot of moving parts so bearings, motors, ball screws...  A lot of this tends to be off the shelf and you have to design the bits that hold it together etc.

I'd worry less about what aspects of SW to use/are different than what's different in the Engineering.  Unless you're being hired as a CAD expert/Designer/Drafter maybe.

Thanks Kenat.

Yeah the new job will be about 90% SolidWork's. I've been designing aero parts for a few years. I think I was just unfamiliar with the "Machine Design" name.
