Polylines not joining

Polylines not joining

Polylines not joining

(OP)
Hey everyone

My problem is very frustrating to me.  I'm drawing contour lines on site,  and i have different lines shown.  And i want to join them.  So i use the PEDIT command and then join.  But they don't join.  Some times they do and someone times they don't.  I checked to see if they have the same Z elevation and they do.  Why is that?  Any suggestions would be very helpful to me.  I'm using Acad 14.

Thanks
Juice

RE: Polylines not joining

I'm using AutoCAD 2002 with the 'Express Tools' (previously called 'Bonus Tools') installed.  There is an additional 'Polyline Join' facility found in the menu 'Express > Modify > Polyline Join'. This new command allows you to apply a 'fuzz' factor (tollerance) should the lines not be exactly on the same point. Even if you think the lines are on the same point, the existing PEDIT command can have problems sometimes, I've had better results with the Express Tools command in these situations before.

If you have Express/bonus tools installed it's worth having a look to see if this facility is available with your version. (sorry I can't remember exactly what was implemented in each of the versions of the tools).

If you've not got Express tools installed or it's an older version let me know and I'll send you the file.

Hope that helps

Marc

RE: Polylines not joining

You're more likely to have this problem when the coordinates are large, such as over one million.  Autocad has roundoff errors that get significant.  Only fix I know of other than Marc H's suggestion is to copy the linework close to 0,0 then move/copy back to actual coordinates.  Or have your WCS set close to 0,0, use a UCS with the large coordinates to get actual coordinate data.

Carl

RE: Polylines not joining

Autocad is picky about joining plines...they have to be exactly at the same node.  Marc H's suggestion is a good one.  However, if you don't need express tools.  Acad14 has a command called multi-pline [MPEDIT]. For Acad2000 it is an option on the [PEDIT] command.  This will allow you to enter a fuzz distance to aid in joining the plines.

RE: Polylines not joining

Here is a trick that I use.  Grab one of the line that has a straight segment leading up to the intersection.  Move that end of the line to an open spot in the drawing and drop it.  Then reselect it and drop the end point back on the intersection.  Be sure it snaps to the end of the correct line.  Tat often lets me join to two.  Also sometime when a join will not work I will do a fillet with a zero radius.  Hope that helps.

You'll also have problems if you have two or more lines on top of each other. For example if you filleted twice without realizing it.
