RE: BS 970 817-M40 T Hardness

The steel in question is 817M40 (the old EN24) and classified as through hardening.

"T" is the hardened and tepmered condition, and in this case "T" is 55/65 ton/in2.  The quoted hardness in this condition is 248/302 HB.

RE: BS 970 817-M40 T Hardness

FYI, 248-320 HB is equivalent to ~ 260-320 HV according to ISO 18265 Metallic materials — Conversion of hardness values.

RE: BS 970 817-M40 T Hardness

(OP)
I have found values in hte range of 260 - 300 HV but after mechanical treatment (deep grinding). The normal value (before to remove material) was around 400 HV!
