Copying a model
Copying a model
(OP)
Hello,
I'm trying to build a bridge model in separate pieces using SAP2000 v14.0.0. I wish to first create the substructure in one model, and then create the superstructure in another model. This will allow me to run a separate analysis for each component. However, I also wish to merge the two models together in order to analyze the whole system. Is there a way to copy one model into another while still maintaining all the defined labels/section properties/local axes?
Thanks!

RE: Copying a model
is this question just to see the possibilities of SAP or is engineering decision? cuz as engineering problem i think that u dont have to treat bridge like that.it is more useful to design whole bridge and take results for all structure components.
i dont know if SAP can do that, if yes that is really wonderfull
bye
RE: Copying a model
I think pozze has an important point: The less adventure in engineering work, probably the better.
What I am sure of is that SAP2000 does copy and paste GEOMETY via clipboard. It wont copy other assignments like loads or section definitions that way. When you copy geometry, remember that coordinates are transferred as they are between models.
I have noticed that other assignments dissappear when I use cut and paste via clipboard. Honestly I havent really tried further.
When models are small, cutting and pasting between S2K files to create a common S2K, does work, at the cost of additional editing of course(a high precision work), eg changing labels manually.
My current guess is that you will have problems trying to merge finished models. You will be fine if you just merge geometries and re-assign later.
Good luck

RE: Copying a model
I was able to combine separate models by importing the SAP2000 .s2k text file of the model I wished to copy into my other model file. This successfully transfered all the labels/section properties/local axes from one model into the other without having to redefine these properties.
