2D Profile milling combined with "helical" in NX6

2D Profile milling combined with "helical" in NX6

Dear all, we are a mold/die shop, using NX6-CamExpress [besides Hypermill] for machining [up to 5 axes & WEDM]. After hardening we would like to machine our 2D curves in a 3D manner, it can be compared with helical milling. After one pass around the profile the depth-feed [Z movement] should also be done, equally devided to the profile length, we are talking about a z-movement of 0.25 mm at each profile-pass. It looks a littlebit like streamline/helical-spiral. But I have my doubts about this one if I choose the on-profile option with respect to accuracy. Anyone some good tips/hints. If no multi-axis is needed for machining we base our machining on ME10-DXF.
Thanks in advance, Bert

See the attached part.

I used fixed contour and selected the Surface Area Drive Method and a Helical Cut pattern.  By Selecting the face of the cylinder in the center of the part as the Drive surface and setting the projectsion vector to Normal to Drive I have the cut you described.

Hi John, this can be done indeed by using bodies for geometry-input. However as stated in my thread, we would like to use only DXF as input, the more because we only have CamExpress available and we do not want to use Solidworks [our design-cad in combination with 5-axis Hypermill] for the designpart. Our engineering department uses ME10 for the DXF-2D design.
Until now I only found streamline available maybe you have an other suggestion?

Thanks, Bert

Hi John, the profile that need milling operations are from aluminium extruded dies with various irregular shapes. Is there any way to create block- or anuy shaped "helixes"?

Hi John, found a solution within the 2D Finish Walls operation, using the engage on shape option within NonCuttingMoves. So I can use cutcom and full stock functionality within machining. See attached pictures and many thanks for the collaborative thinking.
