?? spandrel beam

?? spandrel beam

?? spandrel beam

(OP)
Given that ACI-116R reads:
beam, spandrel — a beam in the perimeter of a building,
spanning between columns and usually supporting a
floor or roof.

Does this mean that beams spanning between supports other than columns are NOT spandrel beams?  Example: a beam spanning between two larger beams to form the edge of an elevator opening or the like.

Or do engineers use the term "spandrel beam" to reference any beam in an edge condition?

RE: ?? spandrel beam

I refer to any edge beam as spandrel, irregardless of its support conditions.

RE: ?? spandrel beam

I use the term spandrel only for a beam at the periphery of a building.  If it is around an interior opening, I call it a trimming beam.  But the provisions for spandrel beams apply for any beam which has a slab on one side only.

RE: ?? spandrel beam

I agree with hokie, but it is really only a matter of semantics.
