Homogenous wear of teflon hoses

Homogenous wear of teflon hoses

Homogenous wear of teflon hoses

(OP)
Hello, I was hoping someone could lead me to information regarding what I believe is called "homogenous wear".  It's the tendancy for a material rubbing up against a component of the same material to wear and chafe faster than if two different materials were wearing.  This is most common in polymers, I believe.  In our case, it has to do with teflon hoses.

I learned about this in college, briefly, while working on a friction project.  The TA mentioned it in passing, and it hasn't come up again until now, so I don;t even know how accurate this information is.  A cursory survey has turned up nothing.

We are looking for alternative solutions, but we would like something for our records.

Thank you so much for your help.

RE: Homogenous wear of teflon hoses

You are right that it's bad to have two pieces of the same material rubbing as wear is high in that case. Use two dissimilar materials. I would look at ultra high molecular weight polyethylene as one option as it has great wear resistance.

For specific material combinations with low wear, Pat and Pud can probably make good suggestions.
