Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

(OP)
Ok, I asked for the first post on this topic to be deleted because for some reason some people took it too personal... Hmmm I wonder why!

Anyways

What's people's opinion on this topic? . Differences between manned and unmanned platform? pluses and minuses.

. Sabelarias (sand worm coloney): how do they affect offshore?

. How do backflow of wet gas affect wells? and isn't there a way around this?

PS: I've discussed this with some friends from the oil & gas sectors and have my own view based on that and my experience.
But I just want a better understanding from well experienced people. I am not looking for what people do, I want personal opinions.

Please do drop more information or knowledge you have on this subject they will all be taken in and appreciated.

RE: Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

We didn't take it personally.  You have asked several questions all too broad for an engineering tip.  You are actually requesting a lot of free work, because any meaningfull response to such questions requires much more information than you have stated and a lot of number crunching and/or a near dissertation be posted by anybody trying to help you.

If you can ask a simple question (like 1) I'm sure you'll get a response.

You can't possibly ask this Manned vs unmanned question, because it has no answer if you don't provide all the associated data.  You haven't even stated the water depth.

Why man something that doesn't need to be manned?
What equipment?
Can it be automated?
Is manning 24/7 required or will daytime, etc. only be OK?
Are crew quarters required?
Is it possible to transport crews when you need them?
Cost of that transport.  Cost of trips.  Number of trips.
How far away from base?  Helicopters, or crew boats?
What's the cost of crews quarters, crews and support vs the cost of automation?

Basically, if you can automate a process offshore, its usually worth it, as long as you can maintain it.

Other than that, you need a FEED study because these and all your other questions will be appropriately answered with the backup data you need to get funding.  Don't say you don't need a feed study, as that will only confirm you don't even understand the depth of your questions.

Hopefully this post will last at least long enough for you to get the idea that you have asked for a lot of work to be done free and that's not the purpose of Eng-Tips, which is why your first post got axed.

RE: Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

The minimum for the manned platform requires four operators, one mechanical technician, one electrical technician, one laboror, one IT/comms/engineering technician, two warehouse persons, two cooks, one logistics person, one admin person, one helo person, two fire fighters, six housekeeping stewards, one medical technician, one security officer, ...  winky smile

JLSeagull thnx for that response, I like! take that to your board!.

BigInch,
I actually asked for the first post to be deleted because of the no. of responses it had which were irrelevant.

Thanks for your response again, and I dont have any specific offshore or anything in mind hence why i stated it is a general question and why I dont need a FEED.

I just want to understand the process and the pros and corns of them. I just want a general answer, as I just want to understand more of the initial concerns etc. like your saying water dept etc, your questions are good responses as they give me are sort of what i was asking for. i.e. what will make someone choose this over that.

All I want is just when you reckon one is better than the other etc. As companies are favoring unmanned more these days etc, but I really have no clue on what the benefits of one over the other is hence my question.

The other thing  which I'd be grateful for an answer is wells, how does wet gas affect them?

Does that in anyway clear the misunderstanding or just made things a lil more vague? thanks anyways

RE: Manned Platform Vs Unmanned Platform?

OK I understand what you want, but for that you need a book about offshore development, not Eng tips.

See the Oil & Gas Journal publications division.  They have a lot of general introductory books about most aspects of OG, well production, onshore and off development.  General and highly detailed.  Pleanty of topics are covered and they explain all of these things you're asking about.
