To use M=1 in calculating tr of head, all reinforcement has to be entirely within the spherical portion of the head.
Does that mean that as an example: The centre of a I/D 6in nozzle is located 5in from the edge of the spherial portion of the head, that if the area A1 and A5 is limited to a radius of 5in from the centre of the nozzle, tr can be calculated with M=1.

Yes, correct. You can decide the radius for calculating A1 and A5 (of course within the upper limit per code) and if by doing so you have sufficient reinforcement, then you are OK. And of course if the limit you choose is within the spherical portion, then M=1.

One thing that wasn't clear to me was if you could arbitrarily limit the extent of "reinforcing" specifically to make it fall within the spherical portion.  I sent a request for interpretation in, and got back an answer agreeing with prex's statement.  That was maybe a year ago.
