Using Configs

Using Configs

Using Configs

(OP)
Anyone having issues with using configurations in 2009?
I have an assembly with 3 config's, which uses 3 subassemblies; one for each config of the main assy.
Everything looks good. But, when I save and open the main assy the next day, some of the configs of the subassy get switched or messed up.
I am the only user.
I have never had issues with using configs like this until now.
Just curious if anyone here has has this problem.

RE: Using Configs

No problems here. Are you using a DT to control the configs?

RE: Using Configs

Definitely use a design table for this.  There are some things that just unravel if not controlled w/ DT.

No, no DTs.
The one part of SW I have never got into was using DTs because other users at different companies, including the bosses, didn't understand them and I was told don't use them.
Now that I'm alone at a start up, I can start using them.
Thanks for the info!

RE: Using Configs

The idea that using DTs may be necessary to avoid data corruption in configurations seems deeply troubling to me.  Perhaps a red flag for avoiding 2009 until further SPs...

RE: Using Configs

Then you also need to avoid SW 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003...

Get it?

RE: Using Configs

SuperMPG ... This is not specific to SW09. Some people have reported changing configs in just about every version of SW. Much the same way that some people have found their install of SW???? is unstable, or the latest SP has caused problems. Everyone's 'mileage' varies.

If you are waiting for a perfectly stable version, you are in for a long wait.

BTW, many 'changing' config problems are PEBCAK problems .. i.e. Misapplication of the "This configuration only" switch when setting dimensions. A DT helps prevent that simple error.

RE: Using Configs

Sorry if this is obvious to everyone, but be sure that you include a config for every upper-level assembly that uses the variable subassembly.

It took me a while to figure this out.

RE: Using Configs

I guess it's configs that need to be avoided!!

:D

RE: Using Configs

100% agree with SuperMPG with regard to use of configuration.

I think most user abuse configurations.  Configuration was not designed with that purpose in mind.

I only use default configuration for every model (part or assembly) except toolbox items.

RE: Using Configs

I took it back.

Beside toolbox items, the only model (part or assembly) I used configuration is when a model changes its geometry when in use, like springs, for example.
