Torsion Spring with short hook ends

Torsion Spring with short hook ends

Torsion Spring with short hook ends

(OP)
Guys,

I'm struggling to model the hook ends of the torsion spring. It is a short hook end that is bent 90 degree from the last coil.

I'm doing it in Solidworks 2008.

Anyone would like to share experience?

Thanks

RE: Torsion Spring with short hook ends

More information would be useful: post your model or picture, what have you tried, what were the errors.  Without that here goes.

Make a 3D spline paralel to the end of the spring that bends
appropriately.  Sweep a circle along this spline.  Remember not to have self intersecting surfaces by keeping the radii of curvature and the diameter of the circle in mind.  Matt Lombard's book has some very similar examples.  I hope this helps.

RE: Torsion Spring with short hook ends

After creating the Helix sketch, close it.
Start a new 3D sketch and use the Convert Entities tool on the helix.
Add hook geometry to the ends of the converted helix, and close the sketch.
Create a plane at the end of one hook geometry.
Create a sketch on that plane, and draw a circle centred on the end of the hook (or use a Pierce relation to constrain the circle), then close the sketch.
Create the Sweep.
