Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

(OP)
Okay, I know the official solidworks line is that it doesn't work on the Home version of XP and Vista.  Has anyone tried to run it on the Home versions?  I'm buying a home computer and the "Ultimate" or "Business" versions of Vista cost about $150 extra.

I haven't tried installing on Vista, but I couldn't install on XP Home.  There might be a workaround.

RE: Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

I have used it on both XP Home and Media Editions, it worked. Is more stable on XP Pro. Have not tried Vista.

The official line is that SW is not supported on any Windows Home versions, not that it doesn't work.

Some people run SW on a Home version without any problems, some others can run it but have some problems, and yet others can't even install it.

IMO, the extra $150 is probably worth it in the long run.

you can get xp pro for $139 from places like Newegg.  XP-32 and -64 are priced the same.  From my experience SW runs a ton better in XP then Vista.

RE: Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

I am running SW2007 & SW2009 at home on an XP Home edition with no problems.  If your install is "mission critical" go with XP Pro I'd say.

RE: Does SWX work on "Home" Operating Systems?

I had the "Engineering Stimulus" (similar to student version) on my PC at home with Windows XP Home. Didn't have any major issues. It was slow, but I'm pretty sure that's an issue with the amount of RAM and other hardware, not SW or operating system. I did not have any issues with video and such, but I also only did small, simple parts and assemblies.

I'd definately get the "Pro" version though. Or see what things look like when Windows 7 is released if you can wait. However, if you are shelling out for a PC capable of running SW well and the SW software, I'd expect $150 is only maybe 5% more. I can understand not wanting to waste $150 even if it is only 5%, but in this case I think it's worth it.

SW2008 and 2009 both have worked on my vista home 32bit on my cheap home laptop.

Like others have said, it's hit or miss when using an "unapproved" OS. Even if it does end up working though, you'll be on your own as far at tech support goes. In the end, I'd pony up the extra $$ just for piece of mind.
