Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

(OP)
Many of the engineers who frequently visit this site have referenced the book Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist over the years, and some of you may also have taken the course of the same name that is offered by ASM International. For those of you who have used the book, what specifically did you like about how it is written and organized? What topics would you like to see included in the book that it doesn't currently cover? What do you refer to it for most often, and what do you find most useful about it? In order to make it a better and more useful metallurgical reference, how would you like to see it changed?

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Maui,a good attempt to revisit the book. Perhaps response should be elicited from those who have not had a formal Metallurgy training!

Please let us know what additions or deletions you might want to make!

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Arunmrao, I wasn't certain if I should post this question in the Metallurgy form or if I should post it in the Mechanical Engineering forum instead. My reasoning was that non-metallurgists who have questions often come here for advice, and so they would likely consult this reference at some point as well. But there might be a larger audience in the mechanical forum. And since cross-posting is not allowed, I can't ask this question both forums at the same time.

I was thinking that a chapter on PVD and CVD coatings might be useful, as well as a section on powder metallurgy. Any thoughts?

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Coatings,P/M are relatively new areas and certainly a chapter each on them will be beneficial. I am sure others too might endorse.

As your cross posting is for a good cause,I think, site management will bear with this transgression.

I agree on all counts: PVD/CVD coatings, powder metallurgy, and cross-post into the Mechanical forum.

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

It's been a long time since I read the book, but from what I remember, it talked about the effect adding various alloying elements had, but not so much about why those effects occurred.

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Hg, A basic book like this would perhaps primarily discuss, the How and What ,but rarely delve into Why as the readership target is for non metallurgists.

RE: Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

I'm not a metallurgist, but that question was the primary reason I was reading the book.  I bet they could add a fairly simple explanation of how stuffing things into the lattice will affect its properties.
