1/3 hp 120v: starts sometimes and more

1/3 hp 120v: starts sometimes and more

1/3 hp 120v: starts sometimes and more

(OP)
Bought this at a yard sale and probably overpaid: I reversed the direction, no problem. Motor starts, sometimes, sometimes not - just hums, AND sometime in the WRONG direction. When it does not start I can turn the shaft to start it. BUT I can get it to run in either direction???

Is this a correctable problem? How?

Did I provide enough info?

TIA

Check the centrifugal switch. Also check the start winding and the start capacitor if it has one.

Thanks for the reply.

I had motor apart and cleaned it up a bit. I did not see a capacitor - looking in all the wrong places?

The centrifugal switch was sticking. Cleaning it helped. I do not know if it is functioning as it should - first time experience. I cleaned the contacts that it activated.

You have me on the start winding. Without having seen this motor could you be a little more graphic? And what does checking mean. I do have a volt/ohm meter. I did not notice any burn or discoloration around.

Are there any other posts that might be informative? I do not quite know which keywords will get me there.

STOP!

Opened up the motor again and found a wire not connected to anything. Red, one of the ones that can be switched for reversing rotation. I think I see where it is supposed to go.

Later. . .

I fixed it!

I re-attached the wire and hooked the motor up and away it went.

Well done, and thanks for the feedback.
