20 lead Cat generator
20 lead Cat generator
(OP)
Anyone bored and ready for a fun exercise? I recently came across an old Cat generator (rather large) with no nameplate data readable except the name. It has 20 leads coming out of it. None of the leads are ID'd. I suspect that it may be the "two gens in one" program. Wondering if anyone here might have a procedure or guideline for identification of the leads. Seems to have a four pole rotor. Up for some mental gymnastics?

assume 3 phase, so 3 multiples of 6 leads could get you to 18, but not 20.
What about two sets of 9+N Wye? though I can't see the use in that.

Earlier CAT Electric Power Generation classes actually had a published procedure to figure out unmarked leads. I no longer have a copy but yor local dealer should be able to find a copy.
