Bolt material in transformer seismic qualifications

Bolt material in transformer seismic qualifications

Bolt material in transformer seismic qualifications

In the seismic analysis of electric transformers, the IEEE 693 and the IBC or CBC govern the acceptance criteria.   The transformer construction industry has traditionally used Grade 5 bolts with the nuts installed with calibrated torque wrenches for the connections.  The CBC references the AISC specifications and these specifications specify only bolts that conform to an ASTM specification.  Does this mean than the industry is changing from Grade 5 bolts to A325 bolts or some other material listed in Section A3.3 or A3.4?

RE: Bolt material in transformer seismic qualifications

1)  Hello 'oldrunner'.  Wondering if you might be my former boss at CYS.

2) Wondering if you might be able to help me by providing a copy of a white paper you mentioned in another forum (soil mechanics)...   " "Pole Building Design"; my edition is 1970.  There is "Design Notes and Criteria - Pole Type Buildings" by Degenkolb and Associates (San Francisco) that was published for JH Baxter."

I am having trouble locating my copy, and need this article for review because I believe it forms the basis of the well known IBC/UBC unconstrained foundation design formula for lateral loads on piers and caissons.

Any assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Towerman:

1.    No, I'm not your former boss, but I did go to Poly with "C" and "S" and I went to high school with "Y" if we are talking about the same Sacramento structural engineering firm.

2.    I do have a copy of the 1968 edition of the "Design Notes and Criteria Pole Type Buildings" by H. J. Degenkolb.

3.    In reviewing the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals; Section 13.10 references D.L. Ivey and L. Hawkins "Signboard Footings to Resist Wind Loads"  Civil Engineering, December 1966.

RE: Bolt material in transformer seismic qualifications

I e-mailed a request for PDF of "Design Notes and Criteria Pole Type Buildings" by H. J. Degenkolb.

Much more was included in my e-mail message.  Good to meet you in the virtual world.
