SOLAS Requirements

SOLAS Requirements

SOLAS Requirements

(OP)
Hello all;

I am developing a life raft light that needs SOLAS approvals. Does anyone have experience with approval agencies that provide SOLAS certifications? I am located in Canada, but don't mind using agencies from elsewhere. Thanks,

Steve

RE: SOLAS Requirements

The SOLAS requirements are easy to find.  I don't know anything about obtaining SOLAS approval.  My very limited experience is with ABS approval.  Clarify whether you are addressing inflatable raft like the Viking or an escape capsule.  If a capsule, downlad the GUIDE FOR BUILDING AND CLASSING LIFTBOATS from ABS 107.  If this does not help then search for the inflatable requirements.

RE: SOLAS Requirements

JLSeagull,
He apaprently is only seeking approval for a light.

I am not sure about the approval process, sorry. I am sure I will run into an ABS principal surveyor in the next day or two and will ask. Is this SOLAS or out of LSA (life saving appliances) Rules?

You might also look at www.eagle.org for ABS services. Don't recall seeing anthing in the past but there may be contacts there.

RE: SOLAS Requirements

ABS surveyor told me they do give type approval for equipment required to meet a SOLAS requirement. Other regulatory bodies probably will accept that ABS approval, but it will still need to be submitted to those (Lloyds etc).

eagle.org is a place to go.

RE: SOLAS Requirements

I used to work for Lloyd's (comparable to ABS, DNV, RINA, etc.) What you'll need to do is build (develop) the light raft light as per the IMO Standard and then have a lab or testing house test a sample unit while it is witness by an IACS member Classification Society (Lloyd's, DNV, ABS, etc.)
As "rovineye" said, if you contact your local Class Society they can guide you with the process and all other organization will accept an equivalent certificate.

All the best,
