thread725-197529: Pipe Welding
I have a welder qualified to a procedure using GTAW to weld P8 to P1. ASME IX specifies that the wps can only use the original P8 to original P1 group qualified in the PQR so we cant write a WPS  with P8 to P8 from our PQR. We do have a different PQR with P8 to P8. ASME IX allows this welder to weld materials from P1 thru P11 (QW 423.1). Does this allow him to weld P8 to P8 using a weld procedure other than the one he has qualified to which uses the same consumable F No.?

RE: QW 423.1 and use of another WPS by a welder.

Yes, based on what you stated above if he used a consumable with the F-No for the P1 to P8 WPS, and all essential variables for welder performance remain the same for the P8 to P8 WPS as for the P1 to P8 WPS that he qualified against.

RE: QW 423.1 and use of another WPS by a welder.

Review QW356 for limitations.
