Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

(OP)
Dear All,
I had Radiography Test (RT) for several weld joints and found few are rejected due to porosity. Our Client is insisiting to have more test (we have 5% of the joints) as a penalty of the failure. Is there any penalty on failure of weld joint.
Regards

RE: Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

most times i have seen 10% and if 10% of those get rejected then you do another 10%, if you get another 10% reject then it goes to full RT of welds.

RE: Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

sounds about right, depends on which spec, some call for 2 welds extra from welders who made repairs.

need a spec to confirm

RE: Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

Standard practice in my industry and very sensible precaution.
1- Set testing frequency
2- No problems, reduced frequency can be considered
3- Problems detected, increase frequency, sometimes as much as 100% until problems disappear.

RE: Is there any penalty on weld joint Failure

Statistics would say that if you have a representative sample of 10% of the population, the percent failed welds can be extrapolated to the population.  So if 10% of the 10% are bad then you can be confident that something like 10% of all the welds are bad, rarely an acceptable outcome on a job where you are bothering to test.

Like the other posters, I would look at the data and any welder with a failed weld would get 20% X-Ray the next day.  If ANY of those welds fail I would do 100% of that guy's welds until you get around to running him off.

Another comment.

Welders hate to repair welds. We always make sure that the welder that had the weld failed is the one repairing it. It goes a long way to make sure he improves.

I agree with Zdas04 on that. I've seen many welders go home.  I've let them retest a week later or so and let them back to work after some time out.
