maximum root opening for pipe pile splice
maximum root opening for pipe pile splice
(OP)
Looking for the maximum root opening for a pile pile splice. Complete penetration bevel groove weld, 45 degree bevel, 406 mm X 9.5 mm pipe pile, metal backing ring (50 X 6). I have a pipe pile slighly out of plumb (50 mm) and would like to take up some of the offset at the splice about 4 m down.

RE: maximum root opening for pipe pile splice
If you are using a backing ring for this weld joint you have some latitude regarding the root spacing. If you are using a 50mm wide backing ring, I would hold the root opening to 25mm. Anything more than this you can weld build-up the weld prep faces, trim to fit and use the backing ring for final fit up.
RE: maximum root opening for pipe pile splice
It would probably be quicker to lay out 25 mm on 2 connecting piles and cut it off, dress it up, slip in the backing ring and weld it up. A lot less time under the hood.
