Stresses on the edges of duct

Stresses on the edges of duct

Stresses on the edges of duct

(OP)
Dear all mechanical engineers,
Can you please guide me for determining the stresses developed in the attached diagram?
Its a section of duct and in that duct some X amount of pressure is acting on the walls. On the corners of the rectangular duct, there will be the same internal presssure.
I need an equation by which i can calculate the stresses developed in the corner portion. What kind of stresses will be there?

Please guide me.

Thanks
Praphulla

RE: Stresses on the edges of duct

Use Roark for a square plate. Depending on the stiffness of the side walls you'll either have a plate that is simply supported at its edges, or built in. The answer will lie somewhere inbetween.

RE: Stresses on the edges of duct

If you do not use stiffeners on the rectangular duct under the internal prossure it will try to get into the round (circular) shape. First, assume fixed end moment connection for the connection. In case the connection can take the bending moment the problem is solved. In fact the connection is not fully fixed or simple supported if you do not use stiffeners required.

Otherwise, you need to check stress and deflection calculation on the duct plate by large deflection method given by Timeshenko's "Theory of Plates and Shells".

Hope it helps.
