Joint Category and production impact test.
Joint Category and production impact test.
(OP)
I have the following issues need your help:
(1) Is the circumferential seam of nozzle pipe to flange weld joint a Category B joint or Category C joint? I read ASME VIII Div.1 UW-3, looks like it is a Category C joint. Fig UW-3 confused me.
(2) If the vessel MDMT is -46 DegC, is production impact test required for the nozzle piping to nozzle piping welding (Category B joint per ASME VIII Div.1). Assume the nozzle pipe material is SA333-6 and thickness is 12.7 mm.
Please advise.

RE: Joint Category and production impact test.
Questions;
Reply; Yes. Review UW-3 (c)
This question seems confusing. Are you asking if the nozzle butt weld that joins the nozzle to piping requires impact testing? Can you illustrate with a drawing?
RE: Joint Category and production impact test.
Thanks for your comments.
Please see the attached drawings. Regarding Questions 2, we knew that production impact test is requird for the vessle. but I dont know if we need producion impact test on this kind of nozzle or not. I read UCS-67(d) and UG84(i), but I can not get the answer by myself.
RE: Joint Category and production impact test.
Your drawing indicates these are C category nozzle weld joints.
Regarding the second question, look at Part UCS-66, Note 2 (c) in Figure UCS-66. This will give you guidance for pipe, fittings, forgings and tubing not listed in Curves C and D.
RE: Joint Category and production impact test.
You will further find that SA-333-6 and SA-420-6 materials are impact tested per the material specification and are generally exempt under UCS-66 to -55F or so.

Mike
