Generator Synchronisation Window

Generator Synchronisation Window

Generator Synchronisation Window

(OP)
Hi,

I have a 500kW generator that is going to need synchronising with the grid.  I have the recommended synchronisation parameters from the manufacturer but I tend to think that the frequency tolerance they have given is a little low (+/- 0.1Hz).

Is this a typical value?

Thanks

RE: Generator Synchronisation Window

You might want to check the utility co's requirements, if any, as well.

RE: Generator Synchronisation Window

+/- 0.2% is the recomended figure. Preferably synchronise when the generator is <0.2% fast. We synchronise several machines within this tolerance. Protection settings are +0.5Hz/0.5secs for over frequency and -2.0Hz/0.5secs for under frquency during parallel operation.

RE: Generator Synchronisation Window

Just a note that 0.2% corresponds to 0.12 Hz at 60 Hz, 0.10 Hz at 50 Hz, so we are in the same ballpark.
To get a feel for the reasonability of these numbers, they correspond to one synchroscope revolution in 8.5 sec and 10 sec respectively.  This "feels" about right for manual synchronizing, auto synch could be somewhat faster (wider window) based on the precise control of the closing signal.
Consider auto synch to avoid "bumping" the generator due to diversity in operator reaction time - back up with synch check permissive for best control.
