(OP)
I want to estimate the energy consumption in watt-hours of your typical household top-loading clothes washing machine, for one load of laundry. Assuming it takes a half hour to run through the cycle, for a ballpark guess I would say 20 minute use of a half horsepower motor would work out to about 124 watt-hours. Has anyone with a Kill-a-Watt instrument actually made this measurement? Thanks.

Later, John.

Negative.

Why don't you look up the Energy Star kW usage numbers and see if you can root out a viable number.

I GOT A PET PEVE.......  How come it is ok for an Energy Star washer to use 10W in the off state.  I put a power switch on mine, but the wife keeps forgetting to turn it off. Going to put a one hour delay timer on it so she has to press a button to start it.  Think of all the wasted energy of a million washers. You could still have push button convenience with no power consumption.  Not like you have to have it powered to operate a remote circuit.

Operahouse,
Energy Star is about comparisons. Compared to an older washer, that 10W parasitic load is insignificant.

The interesting thing is, if EVERYONE buys an Energy Star rated washer, would the comparable standard then become what we consider the Energy-Star level of efficiency now?

Was the spelling of the title of your post an intentional double entendre?  If so, clever.

RE: Kill-a-Watt users

OperaHouse, if parsite loads are a pet peve of yours, then the mandated use of parsite load devices should really drive you up the wallet.

Besides I had a energy star frond loader washer, which lasted about two years due to the poorly designed bearings. Threw it out for a cheep top loader. I figgure I save a bunch of money just in the orignal lower cost.
