Small boiler pump location

Small boiler pump location

Small boiler pump location

Hi all, does anyone have any pictures or links to a small external boiler setup (HHW to radiators) around the 30-40kw mark in a small (350m2) building.  I haven't designed one of these systems before so I was looking for some bright ideas on where to put the pump and expansion chamber.  Is it advisable to put these outside next to the boiler itself?

RE: Small boiler pump location

What type of climate are you operating in? I'm in Canada, thus putting any equipment outdoors is a big no-no, unless you want to fill it w/ antifreeze.

Assuming you're in a more temperate climate, I imagine the biggest issues you'll run into are weather-resistance. The expansion tank isn't as much of an issue, as you can spec it easily enough w/ a weather-proof casing. I'm not so sure on the pump, although I can guarantee you that it will cost more to provide a weatherproof pump than an indoor equivalent.

The only thing that really matters is that you pump away from the expansion tank. Place the expansion tank on the outlet from the boiler, as that will be your point of highest temperature, and thus the point of greatest water expansion.

cheers rob, it does get a bit cold here (-10) so the boiler needs a bit of water flow at night i would say.  I guess that this would be build into the boiler controls, ie < freezing, cycle pump, but too bad if the power fails or something right??  Good point!  where do you place the pump and expansion tank in the building usually??

RE: Small boiler pump location

I usually place the pump and expansion tank in the boiler room... which sounds like you don't have.

Unless you are using a plain steel expansion tank, or the building is very tall, the location of the tank in the building (basement or attic) doesn't make a significant difference.

I would locate the pump and expansion tank in a small room in the basement/main floor near the boiler. Keeping in mind it is preferable to 'pump away' from the boiler, and the expansion tank.
