Tie-in for Existing Sewer Lift Station

Tie-in for Existing Sewer Lift Station

Tie-in for Existing Sewer Lift Station

(OP)
I am laying out a gravity sewer line for a new building.  There is a sewer lift station nearby that I would like to tie-in to.  Are there any inssues with core hole drilling into the side of the existing SLS and allowing the effluent to drain directly into the sump?  Is it preferable to run the gravity line first into a manhole near the SLS and then drain from the manhole to the SLS?

The gravity line is for an oil/water separator and the flows are extremely small and will not impact having to resize/reconfigure the existing pumps or alarms for the SLS.

RE: Tie-in for Existing Sewer Lift Station

Anything is possible. However, you would have to get the approval of the sewer authority operating the lift station.

The lift station should be deeper than a sewer manhole. So you would have to enter the lift station deeper to avoid having a drop inside the lift station.

You also would need easements if you have to cross property.

Note that many sewer authorities would want a sampling manhole typically 5' out from the building wall before the flow enters the municipal sewer.

The project is a renovation on existing facilities within an industrial facility.  Simply put, we can do whatever we please (although I will still be following the local municipality's rules and regs pertaining to required velocities, standards, ect.)  The lift station empties into a private pond within the facility where it is treated and released.  I was just curious as to what the standard practice is concerning connections into existing sewer lift stations.  The local municipality does not have any regulations concerning such an incident.  Thanks for the reply.

RE: Tie-in for Existing Sewer Lift Station

Can it be done? Yes. Careful during construction however the concrete core and debris are captured and removed. Pump impellers do not like passing large concrete solids.

Aside from sampling purposes, an upstream manhole makes a good place to drop a suction pipe for a bypass pump should the station require maintence (such as when you go to core in the new hole). This MH is typically close to the station so you dont have a large run of bypass piping, and provided the FM or valve vault has a connection for a bypass pump.
