Anti abrasive protection for screw conveyor

Anti abrasive protection for screw conveyor

Anti abrasive protection for screw conveyor

(OP)
Hello,

We're using screw conveyors for transporting raw material, alumina (Al2O), which is very abrasive. After few days of running the conveyor the blade as well as bearing supports were very heavily worn.

Could you suggest a solution that would help to extend the life of conveyors.

Thanks

What are the current materials that are wearing prematurely?

The blade, shaft and supports are made of regular carbon steel and the transported materials are alumina and silica sand.

Hard facing of the carbon steel with an appropriate weld overlay, such as Stellite, as per AWS D14.6 may be an appropriate solution.

Thank you for your help.
And how can I protect the internal surfaces of the bushes (supports)?

RE: Anti abrasive protection for screw conveyor

Try making the flights from chrome carbide overlay plate.  If its dry,  you could also try rubber ~or if  wet ,  urethane.
For the hanger bearings,  perhaps surround with a box,  and blow a small amount of air into the box.
Where are you located ?

With a screw conveyor use a large clearance between the outside of the screw and the casing, run at minimum speeds.  Try to avoid hanger bearings by using large diameter centre tubes.  Protect any bearings with labyrinth, air purged seals.

Alternatively consider a chain conveyor running "en-masse" at very low chain speeds using hard casing liners with case hardened chains.

Use carbide inserts at the contact ends of the flights for wear resistance. For the bearings an enclosure  can be the nearest you could get to.

RE: Anti abrasive protection for screw conveyor

We produce alumina but don't use screw conveyors very much.
One application we do have we use carbon steel flights with cheap hard facing on the "drive face" on the outer 1/3rd only.
Bearings are kept well away.

I have been out of this section of industry for 44 years now, but one method we used for very abrasive materials was lining screw conveyor troughs and blades with cast basalt material.
Here is a link to one manufacturer, however most of the material we used, came from eastern Europe.
