Marine Variable Frequency Propulsion Drives

Has anyone studied the efficiency differences between the marine propulsion drives systems available?
I understand and suspect that the now legacy CEGELEC (Alstom) variable frequency drives are the most efficient marine propulsion drives across all speeds. Nevertheless, I like to see a study or some research data on the matter.

When I was very young and I navigated once through Danube toward the Black Sea I saw still steam propulsion ships based on heavy oil besides Diesel propulsion and new [and  seldom seen ] was also water jet propulsion for rapid  jetboats.
I think on Mississippi River one could see coal firing steam boats up today.
The steam engine efficiency was about 20%.Was very cheap and very polluting mean. And jet also 20-25% and more expensive fuel.
