Eurocode 3 Part 4-2 (2007) - Secondary Ring Design

(OP)
We are having some trouble getting any meaningful values out of the new formulas for the stiffness of the secondary rings, specifically equations 11.34, 11.35 and 11.36

The parameter mb is defined as the "next smaller integer to mb*". We have taken this to mean we must round down (which would give a more conservative answer), however the main problem is that all reasonable values of the moment of inertia I(R,j) return a value for mb* of between 0 and 1. If we round down to 0 the required stiffness is infinite, but even taking mb* = 1 the result is an exceptionally large stiffening ring.

Has anyone been able to obtain a sensible answer using this code? Or found a better alternative?

For the time being we are sticking with AWWA-D103
