API 682 lists common flush plans for mechanical seals. You should be able to search on the internet for literature associated with this topic as well.

That Crane book is great thanks.

What I would really like to be able to do is some basic heat transfer calculations for seal cooling.  For example, if I have 20C water supplied to a seal and the temp rises to 40C, what amount of cooling do I need to apply to keep the water at 20C?  What is best/easiest/cheapest way to do it?

The Crane book does not seem to give me any guidance on cooling water requirements. Should I just contact a Crane tech sales guy?

When doing a seal selection you are trying to prevent the product vapourizing at the face.  in your application it sounds like if you apply Plan 11 (depending on pump design)it will be sufficient.  seal materials also play an important role.  the best combination would be silicon Carbide vs Carbon.  so check your VP and suction pressure if the margin is reasonable then it is unlikely for the water to vapourize.  if the margin is close then you may need Plan 21 or plan 23 (unlikely for water at 20C)

With some basic pump and process/fluid information your salesperson should also be able to come up with numbers regarding heat soak and heat generated by the seal faces to help you make informed decisions on seal support systems.
