ASME VIII DIV.1 CODE interpretation
ASME VIII DIV.1 CODE interpretation
(OP)
Hi,
I need your advice of the ASME VIII DIV.1 regarding the following two issues:
(1) The distance of the circumferential weld seam and nozzle reinforced pad is only 1 inch (Circumferential joint to the fillet joint of the re-pad).
(2) The circumferential weld seam is covered by the reinforced pad. The distance of the circumferential weld joint and the "nozzle to shell joint" is about 1 inch.
What is the code requirement on the above two situations?
Thanks.

I will make the assumption that your question is related specifically to the measuring of the distance between an opening and a circumferential weld as described in UW-14.
UW-14(a) states that openings that have the reinforcement calculations of UG-37 performed on them may be placed in (or near) weld joints without imposing the NDE requirements of UW-14(b) through (c).
UW-14(b) through (c) is specifically referencing openings that are inherently reinforced, more specifically, it is referencing those openings exempt from UG-37 reinforcement calculations as specified in UG-36(c)(3).
UW-14(d) states that openings that satisfy ONLY the requirements of UG-36(c) (3), must meet the radiography requirements specified.
Given that both of your questions involve a reinforcing pad; this implies to me that calculations per UG-37 were performed UNLESS the reinforcing pad in question is NOT acting as nozzle reinforcement.
What does your AI say?

I will review it and advise. pretty bussy these days after little work for six Months, jobs are pouring all of a sudden.
Do not forget Eng practices, there is no other way to help Engineermat
with his Job. I would ask him to take it to his AI and tell us if he/she
will approve it.
I run in the same situation a couple years back and I was approved.
I may not be in the Code, it is the Engineering and AI's decision,
that makes a difference
on the other hand a Code Case will take forever.

Does anyone have information on the temperature and pressure differences for a 150# & a 300# carbon flange with grade 8 studs?
RE: ASME VIII DIV.1 CODE interpretation
First, you should start a new thread and not hyjack an existing one.
2nd - the pressure and temperature rating by Class and working pressure for flanges can be found in ASME B16.5.
