NFPA 10 travel distance

NFPA 10 travel distance

NFPA 10 travel distance

(OP)
The current and last several versions of NFPA 10, require a maximum travel distance of 75-feet to fire extinguishers in commercial builings.

Does anyone have a copy of the code in force in 1992, that can tell me what it was then?

I have a leased building that has two hall ways with fire extinguishers that exceed 170-foot spacing.

If the code, in 1992 allowed a longer travel distance, then I will pay the cost to install new cabinets.  But, if the code in 1992 had the 75-ft travel distance, I'll require the builidng owner to install them.

RE: NFPA 10 travel distance

you also have to check with the ahj to see what they require, it may be different than nfpa 10

1998 nfpa 10 was 75 ft, and that seems like a normal one for ages, been enforcing 75 for 22 yrs

RE: NFPA 10 travel distance

Does a 75' travel distance essentially translate to 150' between extinguishers, say like in a long corridor?  Or is it 75' from one extinguisher to the next one?

RE: NFPA 10 travel distance

It is always assumed and applied by us as 75' between the two Fire extinguishers(Placement or installation).
Any Clarifications/rectification of this statement will poor in soon.

yes and yes

say you had a 150 ft long corridor

you stick a FE in the middle you meet the requriement

RE: NFPA 10 travel distance

Although May Not have been directly referred/mentioned here;

An Important realistic factor has always been by us that

if this is a long corridore and turns around 90 degrees etc.thus blocking the vision or sight of FE is not possible

We preferred placing one more FE to ensure easy/positive access within sight.Although don't recall exactly if it becomes mandatory as per NFPA 10.

Thanks, guys.  I am pretty sure that the code has been 75-foot travel distance forever.  But, I still don't know for sure.  So, I will probably pay for the two new cabinets out of my budget, rather than argue with the Landlord.

We have had a few rough times this year, so I can do it as a good faith peace offering.
