A36 to 304SS welding

A36 to 304SS welding

A36 to 304SS welding

(OP)
I have a pre-qualified welding procedure which is used to weld structural steel A36 to 304SS. I have two questions:

(1) Which AWS-welding code I should use? D1.1, D1.6 or others?

(2) Does AWS code allow pre-qualifition on dissimilar welding of A36 to 304SS?

Please help. Thanks.

RE: A36 to 304SS welding

Pre-qualidfied weld procedure for dissimilliar metals are not allowed per AWS D1.1, they are not listed as an allowable combination in Table 3.1.

The quickest and best method is to purchase an AWS STANDARD WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION

If example -AWS B2.1-1/8-227 -STANDARD WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION (SWPS) FOR GAS TUNGSTEN ARC WELDING OF CARBON STEEL (M-1/P-1/S-1, GROUPS 1 OR 2) TO AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL (M-8/P-8/S-8, GROUP 1), 1/16 THROUGH 1-1/2 INCH THICK, ER309(L), AS-WELDED CONDITION
