Resin calculation?
Resin calculation?
(OP)
Hi guys,
I just started a job in the composite industry and I have to give a BOM for every item used on a part. My question; how do I calculate how much resin to use on a surface area? I have a surface area of 592.45^2 and I need to have a bond line of .005. I use Solidworks at work so if that helps in any way please let me know.
Thanks

RE: Resin calculation?
Quantity (by weight) should just be volume (area x thickness) times density (get it from the supplier's data sheet) times a factor to account for excess,, wastage, etc (maybe 2X - 10X) depending on the answers to the above questions.
RE: Resin calculation?
The word bond line is usually referred to when joining prefabricated composite parts together, i.e. a glue joint.
If you are doing a lay-up then you would calculate the amount of cloth plus the resin. This will vary depending on the desired resin cloth ratio, the weight of cloth per sq ft and the density of the laminating resin..
Example : cloth .8 oz per sq ft, resin .6 oz per sq ft, total 1.4 oz per sq ft. Approx laminate thickness .015"per sq ft, this is for a hand laid wet resin system. If you are using a prepreg the manufacturer will give you those numbers. Tell us what you want to do and you will get more sensible answers.
