motor leads different sizes

I have two new dual voltage, 9 lead, delta motors where leads 1, 2 and 3 are one wire size larger than the other 6 leads.  One motor is a 15 hp with #12s and #10s and the other is a 25 hp with #10s and #8s.   I don't think I have ever seen this before and I don't see any electrical reason to do this.  This is an added cost to the manufacturer so there must be a reason.  Does anyone know?

RE: motor leads different sizes

Leads 1, 2,and 3 take line current. The other leads take winding current which is about 58% of line current.
Look at the vector sketch of 9 lead delta connections.

Bill,
Thanks...I don't think I have seen that before, but it makes sense, and after thinking about it I don't think I have ever seen a 9 lead delta motor before.
